First Kiwi Chick of the Season!

Some exciting news over at the West Coast Wildlife Centre this week as we welcome the first Rowi Chick of the season!

This little guy spent 5 days trying to break out of the egg. And now he’s here and he needs a name!

All of the kiwi’s in the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary have names, and this one’s father is Bruce Lee. He’ll be kept here at the center until he’s about 1.6 kg, then they’re shipped off to a predator free island before being released back into the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary at the back of Lake Mapourika. He’s got a long journey ahead of him – but you know he’s in good hands with the pro’s at the West Coast Wildlife Centre!

Got a name for this little guy? Suggest a great name on the Wildlife Centres page and you could win a backstage pass to visit him!

(Look at those big feet!)

On a different note, I have never been happier to see it rain. Franz Josef’s water restrictions may be lifted after today .. 100 ml in the forcast for the next 24 hours:) Keep it coming – then the sunshine can come back!

Thanks guys we’ll post more paddling photos next week!
