Lots of events were on last weekend in Franz Josef Glacier, we had our annual South Westland Triathlon event on the 30th, followed by our bi-annual Boxing evening. All the competitors trained really hard for both events, and performed amazingly!
We hired out a couple of our single sea kayaks for the Triathlon event, and were one of the safety boats on the lake for the kayak leg of the race. We sat at Buoy #2 in the Hanna-K and awaited the kayakers… Dale was also awaiting a bite on his fishing line!
The shown above also depicts the unbelievably calm lake state we’ve been enjoying for the last week. Some afternoons have been calmer than the morning trips!
Here’s the first kayak that literally flew past us …
The first kayak was followed by a couple of others, before we caught a glimpse of our blue ‘Storm’ sea kayak with Ollie as the paddler. Ollie was part of a team event, and Jon was the first to arrive at the lake from the 9 k run. Sadly for Ollie – our kayaks don’t stand up to the K1 racing kayaks, and he fell behind slightly on the 6 km lake paddle! (Sorry Ollie!) But at least they’re stable 😉
Here’s the winner for the best dressed coming past: (We hardly recognized him on the day!)
And finally here’s another local coming past in our yellow ‘Shearwater’:
What a fun event – we’re looking forward to it again next year!
