Black swans are a common sight around NZ lakes, but what many people don’t know is that there were no Black Swans in NZ until about 1900 when they were brought across from Australia and introduced into the NZ eco-system.
Throughout this summer we have been watching 1 family of swans at the bottom end of Lake Mapourika in-particular and have watched the Cygnets (young swans) grow and they are now spreading their wings and taking flight!
This particular family has had 2 offspring of their own this season but they also adopted a third cygnet about 3 weeks later which they have taken under their wing and reared as their own.
