Hidden across the far side of Lake Mapourika, only accessible by boat, is our secret rainforest trail.  The trail runs through the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary, home to the very rare Rowi Kiwi.  To access the private trail you will have to join our Cruise & Walk tour, or join a Kayak & Walk Tour with us!

The track has been handmade with love, by Franz Josef Tours and it’s team.  On the walk your guide will help to point out all the native birds that often follow us through the track.  The most common birds you will see are the Fantail, the South Island Robin, Tui and Bellbirds.

Our beautiful bushwalk is also home to many native plants.  This includes many varieties of ferns, supple-jack, Kahikatea, Rimu and Rata.  The lush green colour of the rainforest is the perfect backdrop for a photo.
