Now that we wet and stormy May is behind us, winter has hit with a blast of fine and settled weather! Now this is more like it…
Winters on the West Coast are renowned for being calmer, and generally more settled than any other time of year. We love this as it makes for the most idyllic paddling conditions on Lake Mapourika. Put on another thermal layer – because it generally starts off with a cool misty experience on the Lake:
As the sun heats up, the mist burns off the water and we experience the most blue-bird reflections you can imagine. No summer sea-breeze and no warm westerly clouds rolling in off the coast. Just amazing.
At times the paddle back home can be calmer than the paddle across the lake. In fact even our afternoon trips can be calmer than the mornings:
Needless to say we definitely recommend paddling with us in the winter months… but we believe everything’s better on the Coast in the Winter! Here’s a few reasons why:
- If you’re looking at booking activities – now is the time! Smaller more personalized groups, and maybe even a discount to go along with it!
- Less crowded highways – especially helpful since we’ve got very windy roads
- Looking to do some DOC walks? Empty huts and no sandflies!
- Generally less rain and believe it or not: a milder climate than our neighboring Canterbury and Otago regions
