The last couple of months have been a mixture of warm summer heat, rain, and even a couple of cyclones! We’re lucky to be one of the few company’s in Franz Josef Glacier that can operate in wet weather conditions. So this weeks blog is devoted to those drizzly days on Lake Mapourika!
Rainy days on the Lake can be incredibly scenic. Lake Mapourika is located a greater distance from the foothills of the Southern Alps than Franz Josef Glacier which means we actually receive much less annual rainfall! It’s not uncommon to stay dry on the Lake while it rains heavily in town.

Some of the sunset kayak trips that have departed in the rain have come back with the most spectacular pictures. We actually need a bit of cloud in the sky to create a stunning sunset!
Today is the last day of our popular sunset kayak tours. From tomorrow, we operate our last trip of the day from 3:30 pm ahead of next weeks daylight savings.
If you’re looking to paddle with us over the Easter long weekend, we recommend booking ahead online.
