What’s going on this week in Franz Josef Glacier?

We’ve been blessed with sunshine for a couple of weeks now! We’re loving this calm winter weather, and it’s been creating idyllic kayak conditions on Lake Mapourika. School holidays just passed in a flurry and now we’re left with usual winter tourism numbers. Just ticking along nicely. For visitors to the area I couldn’t recommend this time of year more: less crowds, personalized guided groups, and everything just looks better with a bit more snow cover on our tallest peaks and glaciers! Here’s a recent photo taken by our guide Clare last week:

See that mist above in Clare’s stunning shot? Come out in the mornings and you can experience this too! Follow your trusted guide, with compass in hand as you set out into the abyss…

Mirror – like waters, peace and quiet. Then as the sun starts to heat up over the lake, you’ll see a completely different world:

Remember to throw on your thermals! It’s the best time of day to be out there, but it can be a frosty start! Here’s the latest in the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary:

Hope you enjoyed the pictures, and stay tuned for the next winter update!
